For
25 years the United States Mounted Games Association has provided opportunities
for riders of all ages to enjoy games on horseback and to compete
internationally as well as in the United States. The United States Mounted
Games Association had the honor of hosting a competition including 7 mounted
games teams from around the world during the 2010 World Equestrian Games at the
Kentucky Horse Park. The World Equestrian Games are the next best equine
sporting event to the Olympics Games and we were truly honored to be
involved.
Mounted games is relay racing on horseback. Teams of four riders (with up to
five on a team) work in friendly competition against other teams. There are
also competitions for individuals and pairs. The games require close
communication between horse (or pony) and rider, and success depends on the
accuracy of the rider and the cooperation of the horse rather than just raw
speed. At their best, games are a lightning ballet of communication between
horse and rider. Riders pick up rings from poles with wooden swords, burst
balloons from horseback and put flags into cones on the ground. There are more
than 25 different races and some involve dismounting and vaulting on at speed.
The games are taught at clinics and in beginner divisions at competitions,
which are held throughout the year. There are also opportunities for
experienced games riders to represent the United States in competitions in
other countries.
