Thank you to all the Canadian and United States riders, grounds crew and officials who put their hearts and their bodies into making the first North American Challenge Cup Championship a success. Mother Nature threatened (lightning, high winds and hail) but had the good grace to do it on Saturday night. Another dangerous front was due to come through on Sunday, necessitating moving the largest divisions (4-Ever Young and the A divisions) up on the schedule. Fortunately it too waited until after everyone was loaded and gone. For those of you who prayed for good weather, we owe you our gratitude, since we could not have asked for any better conditions. Riders and grounds crew bravely sloshed through the ring on Sunday but fortunately the water was on the ground, not coming down from the sky and the temperature was a record 76 degrees Fahrenheit. About 140 riders from North Carolina, Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Canada (eight teams in two divisions) and Australia (Nikki French on the Stars) made this the largest USMGA competition.

Special thanks to Debbie Bush, who did an exceptional job organizing this round of the North American Challenge championship and who struggled against impossible odds, (record entries and many, multiple computer breakdowns and trips to the computer hospital), Donna York who made up incredible lunches (and arranged for delivering them to volunteers) and who also moved heaven and earth to get the dinner together Saturday evening, and to Kathy Taylor who spent all weekend on a painful foot refereeing the rodeo.

Thanks also to Robert Taylor who looked over the World Candidates on Sunday (and had to stay in Lexington overnight after his flight was cancelled) and to Chelsea Bush and Paul Greiling, whose efficiency with equipment setup kept the schedule close to the original timetable. The following folks also deserve recognition: Janey Lawrence, our starter, Sharon Brown, Beth Lough and Shelley Hoke who kept score, to the riders who came down to teach the Junior division clinic (Robert Vit, Jon Straub, Leigh Montgomery, Sara and Cassie Greiling, Val Brown and Anna Fields) and to Jamie Dunn, who taught the skills clinic into well after dark. Many, many more folks deserve our thanks, our humble apologies for not having the space to list all of our treasured volunteers.

Canada Red won the A division coolers (donated by Luckett's tack shop and by Welding and Therapy both in Louisville Kentucky) and a trophy from Canadian MGA and USMGA arranged for by Jim Dunn. Egg Fu Chicken won the reserve halters (also donated by Lucketts and Welding and Therapy). Fat Penguins won coolers in the B division. C division leather belts were won by Loud and Obnoxious donated, as well, by Lucketts and Welding and Therapy. The 4-Ever Young division was won by the Nags, who took home coolers.

     The truly amazing thing about the competition was the improvement in the skill level of the riders from the first competition at the Horse Park two years ago.  From the C division to the A division, riders are competing at a level that none of us could have foreseen even last year.  Competition was fast, furious and inspiring.

One regret and apology amidst all the thanks. With the record number of Worlds candidates (almost 30) it was not possible for Robert Taylor to do his usual job of ranking new members. Beth Lough, our membership chairman, has said that anyone who joined as a member in order to be ranked will have their membership extended to cover next year and can be ranked at any USMGA competition. The next USMGA/USEGA ranking competition will be held at the end of March at the Kentucky Horse Park.      While the Junior Division was not part of the North American Challenge, we will post the first heat and the final total as soon as we receive them from scorer Beth Lough.
