The American Open weekend attracted riders from Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Georgia.  The competition went off without a hitch and many times the organizers were actually ahead of schedule!  Competitors and family got treated to a wonderful barbeque Sunday night courtesy of Jeff Lough.  This years competition included two new divisions: a Pairs division and a For Ever Young division.  The For Ever Young division was won by those hard to beat Zippy Chickies.  The weekend started off with the two Pony Club divisions for teams that won regional competitions in areas that originally made up the Heartland region.  The Senior division (The American Cup) was won by the Road Runners.  In the Advanced division competition was extremely close between the two top national teams but in the end the Wild Cats (Cassie Greiling and Leigh Montgomery who rode on the 2002 U.S. Worlds team) took the Heartland Cup.  Awards were presented by Leigh Hartog from Australia who has hosted many Pony Club international mounted games teams. The pairs division was fun for the riders who got to learn a few new games.  The division was won by two riders from this year's P.C. international team Katey Caddel and Alex Lough.  The Master's division also was won by former members of this year's Pony Club international team.  The divisions were very evenly matched this year.  Congratulations to Beth Lough and Carol Bertilson for organizing another successful American Open. Thanks to Robert Taylor for ranking riders and assessing the 2003 World's Team candidates.
